Kicker; "Storm Chasers" Require Insane Stereo
Categories: Industry News Car Audio
With KICKER’s Global Headquarters located in the heart of Tornado Alley, we know a thing or two about one of nature’s deadliest creations – the tornado.
So it only made sense to team up with some of the craziest guys out there, members of Team TIV2 (Tornado Intercept Vehicle) on the Discovery Channel’s "Storm Chasers" television series. They are a collection of scientists, enthusiasts, and eccentrics who take LIVIN’ LOUD to the ultimate extreme from mid-April to late June, setting out on preposterous missions to track down deadly tornadoes.
After a successful season last year, the "Storm Chasers" are hot on the trail again this year in the KICKER-equipped TIV2. The KICKER technical pros installed a pair of KB6000 full-range speaker boxes in the rear of the storm-tracking vehicle, a pair of KM620 Marine Coaxials in the front for withstanding harsh weather elements, a thin-mount but hard-bumping CompVT subwoofer, and a 5-channel, 760-watt Marine amplifier to power it all. This stereo/P.A. setup is extremely loud, also allowing the team to communicate properly during violent storms that they find themselves in.
The vehicle, a stripped-down '08 Dodge Ram 3500 Mega Cab 4x4 truck-turned-IMAX Theatre 6x6 Conversion, is designed to be as heavy, rounded, and as low to the ground as allowed. The Doppler On Wheels (DOW) is basically a protected mobile mount for an IMAX camera that allows the filming of direct tornado impacts. It took about eight months to build and weighs nearly a whopping 14,000 pounds to the tune of about $80,000.
New episodes featuring TIV2 will premiere in October, but in the meantime you can follow the team - with new vehicles and crew members - on the "Storm Chasers" Field Blog. Or, check out all the Team TIV1 and TIV2 episodes on YouTube.
