Visteon to showcase solutions for automotive market in electronics, climate and interiors
SAO PAULO, BRAZIL, Oct. 7, 2008 - Visteon Corporation is participating in the 17th SAE Brazil International Mobility Technology Congress and Exposition, the largest event in Latin America's mobility sector. During the conference, which takes place Oct. 7-9 at Expo Center Norte in São Paulo, the company will present to the automotive market its electronics, climate and interiors technological solutions.
Visteon's electronics highlight at the Congress is the TV Tuner, an innovative Digital TV receiver, adapted to the Brazilian standard that allows open TV signal transmission in high definition to any video system installed in the vehicle.
"This is technology has a strong market potential," said Jomar Napoleão, Visteon Brazil electronics director. "As vehicle users seek increased comfort and ease, enabling passengers to watch their favorite T.V. shows in a vehicle is a desirable feature."
Another Visteon electronics innovation on display is VSD 4100, an AM/FM radio with DVD player capacity. This new product was developed to allow users the freedom to use it with any screen installed inside the vehicle. In addition, the system includes CD, MP3, WMA and AAC capabilities, an auxiliary input, as well as USB and SD card features.
"The advantage of this system is that a passenger can watch a movie in the back seat while, at the same time, the driver can listen to the radio or use an MP3 in the front seat, independently and simultaneously," explains Napoleão.
The company also will unveil two new navigation system models. One of them - VNS 3500 - is a low-cost model with a 3.5 inch screen. The other - VNS 4300 - has a larger 4.3 inch screen and offers a feature enhanced package.
According to Napoleão, the major difference between the two Visteon navigation systems is the text-to-speech feature on VNS 4300, which revolutionizes the Brazilian GPS market, considering that the device performs a complete reading of the entire trip route.
"Today, competitive GPS only indicate when the driver should turn left or right. With Visteon's solution, the driver receives extended detail about the selected route. This is a solution that only Visteon will offer in Brazil for the next six months," he notes.
High performance interior technologies at competitive costs
Visteon's interiors group will showcase its new two-color, one-shot technology. This is a manufacturing process that uses an innovative injection tool that allows the production of plastic parts in two different colors at the same time, something that previously could only be accomplished today by means of two injections joined by a welding process. Visteon's two-color, one-shot technology helps reduce costs in the manufacturing process, lower investment in tooling and improve quality.
"With our solution, we are able to offer differentiated finishing alternatives, improvements in craftsmanship, potential noise reduction and, at the same time, a lower cost. This new process provides the integration of the vehicle's upper and lower instrument panel in a single part, with two colors," explains Celso Silva, Visteon's director of interiors in Brazil.
Visteon also will feature a stitched instrument panel with ‘soft touch' at the Congress. The stitching is done with a robotic sewing system that stitches on a 3-dimensional instrument panel for large-scale production. With this technology, the part may be finished with various forms of stitched style, all of which give the interior a refined, handcrafted look.
For vehicles in an upscale market position, Visteon is also presenting Visteon Laminate Insert Molding (VLIM) technology. This innovative technology employs a new laminated material for application on plastic finishing parts, making the surface more sensitive to the ‘soft touch.' This process can significantly improve quality and craftsmanship. Plastic parts are injected with a laminated material inserted into the injection mold, thus reducing total production time.
"By using this innovative technology, the process produces a high-quality finish, while reducing interior buzz, squeak and rattle," Silva said. "It provides the features of a premium vehicle, at a lower cost, improving the customer's perception of the product."
Visteon's climate group to introduce new radiator system and air conditioning compressor
For climate control, Visteon's key highlight at the event is a powertrain cooling system with an assembly using plastic locks - an innovative solution developed by the company that does not require screws to fasten the radiator to the car's forced cooling ventilation (fan module). Automakers will be able to reduce the time and costs for assembly and repair services.
Visteon also is introducing a scroll-type air conditioning compressor. This compressor does not use a piston and has a smaller number of parts, allowing it to operate with low friction. This reduces noise and vibration, with the additional advantages of lower weight and reduced engine drag - contributing to fuel saving and improved drivability.
"Due to its unique construction, this compressor allows a smoother operation, reducing cycling when operating," explained Edison Pontalti, Visteon Brazil climate group director. "The driver benefits because engine as the impact on engine performance is reduced during air conditioner usage."
Also related to its climate product range, Visteon will demonstrate its leadership position in the development of air conditioning systems using alternative refrigerants.
