TÜV SÜD Certification of Tele Atlas' Map Testing Process is a First for Industry; Field Check Includes 920 Kilometers of Driving Along 51 Individual Routes to Measure Accuracy and Availability of Addresses and Points of Interest (POIs)
Paris Auto Show, 2 October 2008 - Tele Atlas, a leading global provider of digital maps and dynamic content for navigation and location-based solutions, today announced that TÜV SÜD has certified the quality and reliability of Tele Atlas' map testing methodology. TÜV SÜD is a leading global testing and inspection organization with more than 13,000 certified experts providing consulting, testing, certification and training services at more than 600 locations in Europe, America and Asia.
"When TÜV SÜD audited Tele Atlas' procedures for testing its map database and measured the performance of its MultiNet digital map database in a benchmark field test, we determined that the implemented quality processes meet consumers' expectations for high quality and reliability," said Martin Grzebellus, Managing Director, NavCert, part of the TÜV SÜD group.
TÜV SÜD's audit of the Tele Atlas test methodology included an evaluation of the company's processes for gathering, sampling and validating data. Tele Atlas' test is designed to assess overall performance of a map database from the user's perspective, and the test methods have been incorporated by many of the world's leading car manufacturers.
An important part of the Tele Atlas test is a benchmark field test of navigation devices, one running Tele Atlas' MultiNet digital map database and one using the database of its main competitor. The TÜV SÜD field check comprised 920 kilometers of on-road driving in the Rhein-Main area of Frankfurt, Germany, along 51 individual routes selected at random by the TÜV SÜD.
"The TÜV SÜD certification of Tele Atlas' digital map testing process is a first for our industry," said Michael Klingsöhr, Manager, Navigation Product Quality, Tele Atlas. "The test results showed that Tele Atlas' map database exceeded its main competitor in five of the seven categories* measured and equaled it in the other two. These results reinforce the near perfect benchmarks Tele Atlas established in past map accuracy tests. Tele Atlas is committed to continuous quality improvement and will use the results of the TÜV SÜD certification to help further refine our processes."
*The seven categories tested are: overall, address availability, POI availability, address accuracy, POI accuracy, route calculation and route guidance.
