GetJar, World's Leading Independent App Store, Surpasses 400 Million Downloads

The ‘App Store for Everyone' Releases Poll Finding Americans Taking Mobile Phone to Bed with Them

LONDON & SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--GetJar, the world's leading independent mobile app store, today announced that it topped 400m mobile app downloads, and in the last month saw a 200% increase in downloads from the same month a year earlier. The company also released survey results taken from over 15,000 of its early adopters and influential users, revealing global changes in consumer behavior.

Launched in 2004, GetJar has rapidly grown in popularity and traffic, and now averages over 30 million downloads per month. Its popularity is second only to the Apple App Store. GetJar provides a single source for the widest variety of apps supporting over 1,300 mobile handsets.

The App Store for Everyone

Rapid growth in the use of mobile applications is leading to significant changes in consumer choice and behavior, according to a study carried out by GetJar this month. U.S. consumers revealed that they are increasingly using email and messaging apps instead of making voice calls, and now take as much news from their mobile as they do from newspapers and TV. Also 68% said they surf the web more on their mobile than they do on their PC.

GetJar's base of early adopters and heavy users of mobile content in the U.S. reveal the most popular time to use mobile applications is just before going to bed (at 33%) followed by 27% of respondents saying they use mobile applications whenever they are waiting for someone or something.

While they are heavy mobile content users, GetJar users are also reflective of overall mobile content consumers in that they access apps on a wide variety of handsets. Currently, the top handsets among GetJar users are the Samsung Instinct, LG CU920, BlackBerry Storm, Sony-Ericsson W580i and Nokia 6120.

The fact that GetJar consumers download content across a wide variety of handsets and are also heavy users of mobile content (with 50% saying they download an app at least once a week) makes them an ideal group to predict future trends in mobile consumption.

GetJar survey respondents said they are more likely to discover mobile applications and content from friends (36%) or from browsing and search (21%), proving that there is a growing opportunity for mobile advertisers to tap into. GetJar has also found that users are more likely to discover new mobile web content on their own and more frequently visit those mobile websites that really interest them. This marks a significant shift from the traditional approach of finding mobile content chiefly through carrier portals, which has been the norm for so long.

"Some of the statistics coming out of this poll are surprising, and we know that the millions of influential GetJar users provide a clear consumption pattern indicative of the future for mobile apps," remarked Ilja Laurs, CEO of GetJar. "All indications and stats point to people switching to their mobile phones to do their everyday favorite activities such as email, IM, reading the news and playing games. They are able to independently connect with people and find information and entertainment when they want it, no matter where - even in bed."

Research Methodology

GetJar conducted a quantitative survey on the GetJar network. The company polled 15,000 respondents across the globe, with over 2,300 of the responses coming from the United States.
